Mike Passarell invites pro staffer Terry Allen and Bill Yox out for smallmouths!!

Good old generous Mike Passarell took us out onto the suddenly choppy waters of Lake Erie last week to try and find some more big smallmouths. Thats sorta like "jumbo shrimp" isnt it? Big smallmouths are lots of fun, no matter what you call them. Mike wasnt having fun though, as the reported light south winds were actually coming from a variable direction, and Mike was as busy running the electric motor and retying after getting snagged as Terry and I were fishing. The fishing was a lot slower then in past outtings though, and we caught more fish that we felt were males as well. Thats the thing about catching BIG smallies, locating the schools. In the area we fish, its made up of rocks, and I mean huge rocks, all of which are liberally coated with razor-sharp zebra mussels. We use 6 lb test for less visible presentations and a more sensitive feel, but the line doesnt hold up well to the conditions down there for long. We just keep retying, and maybe swearing under our breath. Just to give you an idea, we even lost the weight to the bouy while pulling its rope through some rocks...now thats abrasive stuff!
Once the water and wind started to lay out and cooperate, Mike was again able to get fishing. He swears by the Gitzit tubes, while Terry and I will use whatever is available. Ive mentioned in here before how good Terry is at this tubing game, but tell you what...so is Mike. Ive learned so much from being with these two guys and now its just a matter of getting that "feel" that develops with time. Its fun to watch charter boats swing in close to see how and why Mike and Terry are always boating fish. I can say with certainty that those two guys were out fishing the whole other boats way better then three to one.
Well, on this particular outing, Terry did get the most fish, with me doing much better then the last trip as I sort out some things, and Mike had his hands full keeping the boat right for his guests. Dont feel bad for Mike though, he still managed to out-do us with the days biggest, a female over 5 lbs. Hes something, that Mike Passarell...

Lake Erie bronzebacks...Terry and Bill ...May 08

If pro staffer Terry Allen uses HIS boat, and HIS truck, and we go to HIS favorite spot and when I loose tackle to snags, I grab HIS tubes and jigs, well, shouldnt HE catch all the fish? Well, I did, so...he did! Last year we were catching 3 and 4 lb smallies with our personal bests being 5 plus lbers. Hell, this trip Terry's first four fish totaled over 20 lbs. He was hot, and he stayed hot. So, I got really good at slipping the net under his better fish. And taking pics. He and I were in the same favorite spot, his. In the same boat too, his. We use the same equipment, and the same line. We even used the same tubes and jigs, like I said, his. Eventually he talked me into fishing alongside him up front. We both cast the same distance, the same direction, and slowly retrieved the same way, at the same time. We both felt structure and reacted at the same time, and bounced off the big rocks in unison. He felt pick-ups from fish...and I watched. Yep, it was just one of those silly days when he even switched rods with me, and caught fish! We (he) ended up with about forty fish, mostly 4 lbers with about six 5 lbers, and two fish over 6 lbs. I did redeem myself and boated a 5 lber, but it was definitely not my day. I still had a blast though, and anytime you can get out on Lake Erie and catch those big beautiful bronzebacks, its a good day. Hey, I did split the gas with Terry, though. Sets me up nice for next trip I figure. I feel a 6 lber in my future...

Bill, fishing with prostaffer Terry Allen

Ok, so its about that time, there should be trout prowling along the shore of Lake Ontario and its tribs. So Terry and I are dying to get out. We went to Sandy and walked out along the rock pier. We cast Cleos for awhile. Nothing, too muddy. Still a few degrees too cold. Of course, we knew that, but we just wanted to fish. The End.

Bills last Sabres blog

I figured Id might as well do this one on the Sabres, as after Sunday, therell be no need to. Short of Philly, the Rangers and Bruins having a collapse as big as...well, the Sabres collapse, therell be no playoffs for these guys. This is a team that has heart, but sadly, no guts. No imagination in front of the net. Every excuse that a coach, player or announcer can make. Their so-called wonder goalie needs a two goal cushion just to break even. When you are one of the top two or three highest scoring teams in the league, and you cant make the playoffs, you dont blame a depleted defensive corp, who wasnt any good anyway, as the problem. It doesnt make much sense to stop that once in a game point blank shot, when those fifty footers routinely go in. Hey what ever happened to Afinogenov or even newcomer flash in the pan Bernier? How about the guys who do commercials but arent giving 100% at games, like Gaustad and Miller? What a fall from grace. Two years ago they should have won it all, but couldnt stay in condition. Last year they led the league then choked hard. Inbetween all the mismanagement in the front office they made the final descent into embarrassment with this years showing. Sadly, theyre still "my" team, I have always followed them, from day one, but this is getting hard to swallow, or better, to enjoy. They should be ashamed of themselves. Let the fishing season begin!

We are still here, just a work in progress! Its all about change...

Me and Pete are still here, and on the air, just undergoing some changes, thats all. WHAM has us doing the show along with Jim Salmon from 6 to 7 am for now, with more changes coming...so we are told! In the next couple of weeks we will know more about schedule as well as topics. Once we get back to what Pete and I might call normalcy, we can really get everything back up to date and running ahead like before. Much the same as the season, spring is getting ready to spring for sure. The snow is receding as fast as my hairline, and the resulting runoff will help bring water levels up for the trout opener. Yep, thats April 1st, just a couple of weeks away. Time to check the kids grades at school so as to make sure they can get out and fish the opener too. Fishing and other outdoor activities are such great leverage for getting the kids grades up, eh? Theres still time to zip over to Gander Mountain or Bass Pro Shops and get them outfitted for stream trout. You bird watchers are having fun with our spring arrivals no doubt. You never know what accidental or unfamiliar bird you might see this time of year, while you welcome home some familiar ones. Me, I cant wait till I hear the "erk-a-lee" of the redwing blackbirds and the chorus of spring peepers in the still-wet fields when the sun warms them just a bit more. Then when the first mourning cloak flitters by, and our radio show has its regular time slot, THEN Ill know our changes of spring are complete! Stay tuned for both!

Still not broadcasting, but still blogging!

Hey folks, don't give up hope, we are still trying! It's a matter of these people talking to their people, etc. We will come up with something. I hope you ALL sent your emails to jeffhowlett@clearchannel.com and let him know, in a nice way, that you would like the program back. In the meantime, don't forget to go see Kenny over at Kenny's Auto Center, 349-6600 for collision work or to pick up a nice used vehicle. Get over and see John Kirby out at Precision Power, 352-9505, it's time to go play in the snow and John has what you need to do it. The off season is a great time to tune up or upgrade your bows with Mike over at C and C Archery, 494-0340 and also to get those special logos put on some clothes and sportswear. Sensguard has the ZEM hearing protection device that won't filter out our show when it's back on. Don't forget about the lovely MaryAnn and the gang over at Zimmerman's at the city market, too. Next time you're in Brockport, stop into M+T Bank and say hello to OutdoorGirl Anita, she's the manager. Just in case anyone was wondering, Frontier Freddy calls my studio every Saturday and gives me a fishing report. We need to get this show back on the air!

Update Blog from Bill

Hi everyone. WHAM is just doing what people in the radio business do, so me and Pete are the recipients of a brief hiatus of sorts. We aren't happy about it, but hey, whatcha gonna do, right? When we come back, we will have a brand new sponsor for the show, and hopefully have the kinks all worked out. See, radio is split into two parts who must work together...programming and content is one, and the other is advertising and ...money. So, if you ever wondered why you sometimes here a really good program and they pull it, or you suffer through one you can't believe anyone would listen to, now you know why. There's prime time, and off time. Stations are smart in putting their most successful programs right when most of you will listen to them, hahaha, no kiddin'. Then that leaves all the other shows to fill in the schedule around that. Then the advertisers come in to buy ad spots, and of course they too wanna be in front of the greatest number of potential customers as they can, too. So in a nutshell, even though you like The OutdoorGuys show, we're coming to you at that sweet timeslot of 5 am, and as long as the advertising public that you do business with doesn't think you are hearing their commercials, we will enjoy only limited success. I guess there's only a couple of things you can do about this, as I see it. Contact the station and let them know you're listening, and tell your friends about the program, too. The other thing you all can do is obvious, let the advertisers know you heard about their product on our show. Let them know their advertising dollars are working effectively for their company and product. Basically, support our show advertisers and sponsor. Tell you what, you do that for us, and Pete and I will save hunting and fishing in New York. Deal? ...Hey, take a kid outdoors.

We actually got bumped from this weeks show, so WHAM could broadcast an infommercial! If you would prefer to hear the OutdoorGuys every Saturday morning instead of an infommercial, email 1180 WHAM and tell them so, now is your chance. Make your voice heard. Email them at JeffHowlett@ClearChannel.com and let him know your voice for the outdoors is wanted. Or, maybe you'll enjoy the hour long commercial about some new wonder pill or whatever they'll air, who knows? Hahaha, hey, we all wanna speak out and be heard, right? Well this is your chance. Email them NOW and let them know you don't like sportsmen's rights being taken away, like losing this show. We will see what happens next week! Don't forget your manners, we don't wanna spam these people, just give them an idea of who is listening.
